Tessellated Dave

The Third Annual Cardboard Challenge, ruled over with a fluffy fist by cosplayers and Prop makers Rustworthy Relics, rolled around, and I decided to give it a go. The concept is to build something from all the card that props and cosplayers regularly have lying around. Glue (paper or wood), masking tape, tissue, paper, paint are all fine. Resins and suchlike are not.

The theme this year was 'skull'. Animal, human, wearable or not, whatever. I went into the challenge with no idea what would be there at the end. No plan. Quite liberating.

Initially, a shape was made with tissue and masking tape, hoping that would inspire. Thinking there wasn't enough cardboard being used, I started covering the shape, planning a smoother finish. In the end, I liked the jaggy look. Layers and shape were built up and sculpted. Tessellated Dave was born.

The result is maquette-level sculpting. A bit school project, but fun.

Final Dave

Materials.

The shape developed quickly, though it wasn't very inspiring at this point. Time to card-up.

This was gloopy fun, but very difficult to photograph. I'd added a crest by that last pic, but it's hard to make out. Paint!

Painting was done almost exclusively with spray cans, mainly Army Painter acrylic undercoat, with a craft gloss varnish spray at the end. I did brush in some black to the eyes.

So, that's Tessellated Dave. Not my most amazing creation, but fun to make. As a maquette technique it's interesting, if a bit slow. Dave reminds me a little of a Terrahawks character, Zelda.

Anyway, roll on Cardboard Challenge 4!

Update: April, 2023.
I felt Tessellated Dave needed to somehow be even more awful. Sooooooo...

... I added glow-in-the-dark paint.
